Quick — Exodus 3

Passage Overview

Exodus 3 is the burning bush chapter — the moment God breaks His silence and calls Moses from a shepherd's ordinary workday into the mission that will define his life. God reveals His name, declares His plan to deliver Israel from Egypt, and commissions a reluctant Moses to confront Pharaoh.

What's Happening

Moses is tending the flock of his father-in-law Jethro near Horeb, the mountain of God, when he notices a bush that burns without being consumed (3:2–3). The angel of the LORD appears in the flame, and God calls Moses by name. He commands Moses to remove his sandals because the ground is holy (3:5). God identifies Himself as "the God of your father — the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob," and Moses hides his face in fear (3:6). God declares that He has seen Israel's misery, heard their cries, and is sending Moses to bring them out of Egypt (3:7–10). Moses protests — "Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh?" — and God answers not with a list of Moses' qualifications but with a promise: "I will be with you" (3:11–12). When Moses asks for God's name, God answers with the famous declaration: "I AM WHO I AM" (Ehyeh asher Ehyeh), telling Moses to say "I AM has sent me to you" (3:14). God then outlines the plan: gather Israel's elders, confront Pharaoh, and lead the people to a land flowing with milk and honey (3:16–17).

God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.'"

Exodus 3:14

Why It Matters

Exodus 3 gives God a name — and that name is not a title or a description but a declaration of self-existence. "I AM WHO I AM" resists every attempt to categorize or control God. He is not defined by anything outside Himself. Moses wanted credentials; God gave him presence.

The chapter also establishes a pattern that runs throughout Scripture: God calls the unqualified and answers their objections not with reassurance about their abilities but with the promise of His own companionship. Moses at the burning bush is not chosen because he is ready. He is chosen because God is.
